![]() ![]() ![]() We are in a weird world indeed, not just because it is populated by ogres, sprites, demons and dragons, but also because Ishiguro puts a fog over the narrative, littering it with elisions, false turns and feints that make us doubt what we have read. They decide to journey to a village, a few days’ walk away, to visit their son they can hardly remember him, but assume he will be waiting “impatiently” to see them. ![]() We follow an ageing couple, Axl and Beatrice, who live in a British settlement composed of tunnels dug into a hillside. Since then, he has taken us (less strangely) to 1930s China ( When We Were Orphans) and (more strangely) the imaginary British dystopia of Never Let Me Go, where children are raised as organ donors but this novel might be his strangest yet. In 1995, he delivered on that promise with The Unconsoled, an enigmatic, mazy and Kafkaesque journey through a nameless European country, as unlike The Remains as anyone could have wished for. T hree years after winning the 1989 Booker prize for The Remains of the Day, Kazuo Ishiguro said, in an interview with Pico Iyer, that he felt he could “produce something pretty strange and weird now”. ![]()

5/30/2023 0 Comments The dead dubliners![]() The night moves along with much discomfort for Gabriel. Attending the party is their nephew Gabriel Conroy, a socially awkward man who would rather be taking a walk alone than spending the night at the dance. The story centers on the night of Julia and Kate Morkan’s annual dance and dinner party, this particular party occurring in January 1904, on a snowy night. ![]() “The Dead” is sometimes considered a novella rather than a short story, seeing as it clocks in at a little under 16,000 words. “The Dead” was originally released as the final story of Joyce’s 1914 collection Dubliners, which features stories depicting Dublin life in the early 20th century. NOTE: This post will contain spoilers for both the story and the film. I was recently assigned to re-read “The Dead” (for about the 300th time) for one of my English courses, so I decided it was time to finally give the adaptation a watch as well, with the story fresh in my mind. Legendary director John Huston’s final film, The Dead (1987), was adapted from James Joyce’s short story of the same title. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments The code name verity![]() After getting her license, most of her novels have been, like Code Name Verity, about women and flight. ![]() Both Wein and her husband have pilot’s licenses, which dramatically shifted the focus of Wein’s novels: before getting her pilot’s license, her novels were mostly about Arthurian legends.
